- Living strands of Spanish moss can be draped over a coat hanger, tucked into the wooden slats of a orchid basket or festooned over a rope in a greenhouse or bright sunroom where other plants live.
- Spanish moss tolerates some direct sunlight but is best in very bright indirect light indoors. Keep it out of drying drafts from heating and air conditioning vents. To keep the clump of stringy leaves healthy, dip the entire wad into room temperature water and let it drip dry. This simulates a deluge of rainfall.
- Packaged Spanish moss sold at florists and used to cover flower foam bases or the tops of houseplant containers is not alive. It is dried. Only wild-harvested or greenhouse-raised Spanish moss that is alive may be grown. It can be purchased from orchid greenhouses.
