- A Barbie doll cake is created with an 8 cup (2 quart) Pyrex glass measuring cup, one 2-layer cake mix or recipe equivalent, frosting and a standard sized Barbie doll of choice. The skirt of the cake is baked in the Pyrex measuring cup as it creates the curved look of a ball gown. A cake mold is available at retail stores that sell cake decorating items; however, the Pyrex cup works just as well and can be reused for kitchen tasks. Decorating tips are needed for adding frosting accents to the cake.
- Mix the cake batter according to instructions on the mix or recipe. Prepare the Pyrex cup by greasing the interior with shortening and applying a light dust of flour. This will prevent the cake from sticking. If using a cake mold, follow its directions for preparation. Pour batter into the Pyrex measuring cup or mold and bake at 350-degrees Fahrenheit for approximately 50 to 60 minutes or until a toothpick or tester comes clean when inserted into the center of the cake.
Remove from the oven and cool for 15 minutes prior to releasing from the baking cup. Gently run a sharp knife between the cake and baking cup to release points that may have stuck to the side. Place the decorator plate on top of the cup and gently invert the measuring cup upside down to release the cake. Cool the cake for at least 3 hours prior to decorating. - The first step in decorating the cake is inserting the Barbie into the cake skirt. Clean the Barbie body with soap and water and let dry. Gently poke the Barbie into the center top of the cake, putting the feet and legs first. The top of the cake should end at the waist of the Barbie. Turn the arms in an upward direction while frosting the skirt.
The frosting choice for the skirt is a personal preference that includes purchased frosting, butter cream frosting or rolled fondant. The top of the cake can be shaved carefully with a sharp knife and formed to create a natural downward slant to the skirt if desired. Frost the entire skirt with frosting preferences, making the texture smooth to allow for embellishing. Gently move the arms of the doll into a natural position to frost the bodice. If using fondant, create a bodice and apply to the doll.
With regular frosting, use decorator tips to carefully apply frosting to bodice. A simple method is to use a star tip to apply star dots in the form of a bodice with either the same or complementary color of the skirt. Accent the skirt in the same manner by applying stars scattered throughout. Edge the bottom of the cake using a decorating tip. The star tip will create a scallop design. Edge the bodice, if desired, with a piping tip to create a clean finish. Additional embellishment can be completed using decorator tips for candy decoration.
