- 1). Place the lower unit in a bench vise. Pull the centrifugal slinger up and over the top of the driveshaft. Unbolt the single bolt and three nuts that secure the water pump, using an adjustable wrench.
- 2). Push a small pry bar under the front of the pump housing and push a second under the rear of the housing to break the housing free. Slide the pump cover and the pump cover gasket from the driveshaft. The gasket won't be reused. Clean the mating surface on the lower unit.
- 3). Slide the impeller from the driveshaft. Pull the Woodruff key from its cutout in the driveshaft. Put a small amount of waterproof marine grease onto it and return it to its place in the driveshaft key way.
- 4). Set the water pump impeller atop the driveshaft, align its key way with the Woodruff key and push it down the driveshaft. Smear the inside of the pump housing with a light coat of white marine grease. Push the pump cover down the driveshaft, over the impeller. Turn the driveshaft clockwise to line the Woodruff key up with the slot in the cover.
- 5). Press the cover over the impeller. Thread the bolt back into its hole and thread the three nuts onto the studs. Tighten the bolt to 35 inch-pounds of torque with a torque wrench. Tighten the nuts to 50 inch-pounds of torque. Push the slinger down the driveshaft, and settle it onto the pump cover.
