- 1). Plant the purple heart in a location with full-sun to maintain its striking purple color, suggests Plant of the Week. It can tolerate most well-drained soils, including alkaline, acidic and clay. Space 2 to 3 feet apart if used as a groundcover or closer for faster coverage, advises Monrovia Horticultural Craftsmen. Apply mulch to prevent weeds and retain moisture until the purple heart begins to cover the ground.
- 2). Water well to establish the plant's root system during the first growing season as well as during times of extended drought. Water once a week as needed during the winter season.
- 3). Fertilizing groundcover plants should begin four to six weeks after planting, using a complete fertilizer such as 12-4-8, recommends Clemson University Extension. Apply at the beginning of each season, except during the winter. Follow the directions on the manufacturer's label.
