How do I Choose a Herbicide for Hay Land Weed Control?

    • 1). Identify the weed or weeds you need to kill by looking at the vegetation's leaves, flowers and growth habits, as well as your geographic location. There are broad-spectrum herbicides available, but if you are dealing with only one or two species of weed, it is more effective to choose a herbicide that's lethal to just that plant or family of plants.

    • 2). Read the herbicide labels carefully to determine if they are labeled for use on hay land and pasture.

    • 3). Consider the time of year you intend to apply the herbicide and what stage of growth the weeds are at. Different chemicals work on different stages of the plant or seed, according to the University of Missouri Extension. There are pre-emergence, post-emergence and non-selective post-emergence herbicides to choose from.

    • 4). Decide if you wish to kill only the weeds on your hay land or all growth, for re-seeding. If starting from scratch, non-selective post-emergence herbicide is the easiest route to clear your hay land for reseeding.
