- 1). Provide petunias with at least six hours of sunlight per day; the more sunlight, the better for these plants. Plant petunias in a sunny area, or trim overhanging branches or shrubs so that the petunia receives full sunlight.
- 2). Apply organic material such as peat, manure or compost to the petunia's soil. Apply a 2-inch-thick layer of material and work it into the soil with a shovel or tiller.
- 3). Water petunias with a spray bottle or watering can so that the water falls gently onto the flower and its soil.
- 4). Water the petunias once per week to a depth of 6 to 8 inches. Withhold water if the plants have received sufficient rain.
- 5). Deadhead the petunias of dead or dying blooms, checking for the bad blooms at least once per week. Prune these blooms from the flower to allow more room and nutrients for healthy blooms to grow.
