- 1). Accept and install software updates available from Apple. Connect your iPhone to the computer and open iTunes. Select your device beneath "Devices" on the left side of the program window. Click "Check for Updates" on the right side of the program window to see if there are updates available for your phone. While downloading new software may be cumbersome and time consuming, Apple engineers are continually working on optimizing your phone, and some of these optimizations are programmed to extend the battery life of your device.
- 2). Avoid using or storing your iPhone in extreme temperatures. The iPhone works optimally between 32 and 95 degrees F. You can use your iPhone in temperatures outside of that range, but more battery power will be required for the device to function.
- 3). Edit your location services so you're only using the ones you truly need. Location services let you map out driving routes and check in via Facebook, but they also tag photos with your current location and update apps according to your location. Constantly applying location updates to these programs drains your battery. Turn off locations services by tapping "Settings," "General" and then "Location Services." Tap the "ON/OFF" button to the right of "Location Services" until "ON" is highlighted.
- 4). Fetch information rather than using Push notifications. Push notifications update apps such as Mail and Facebook constantly, but drain your battery more quickly in the process. Turn off Push notifications by managing each application within the "Settings" app and choosing a less frequent Fetch rather than a Push setting.
- 5). Disconnect your Wi-Fi when it's not in use. Leaving Wi-Fi on when you are not using it causes the Wi-Fi to constantly search for a connection, which requires battery power. Turn off your Wi-Fi connection by tapping "Settings," "WiFi" and then tapping the "ON/OFF" button to the right of "Wi-Fi" until "OFF" appears in a gray box. Don't forget to turn the Wi-Fi back on when you plan on using it.
- 6). Lock your phone automatically when it's not in use. If you don't either press the "Sleep/Wake" button on your phone when you're done using it or have the device set to automatically lock after a certain period of time, the iPhone screen will stay on, draining the battery. Set your device to lock automatically by tapping "Settings," "General" and then "Auto-Lock." Select how long you want your device to be inactive before it will lock automatically. Alternatively, press the "Sleep/Wake" button on the upper-right edge of the iPhone to lock your device. To wake the device up after being locked using either method, press the "Home" button along the bottom of the front of your iPhone.
