- 1). Locate the fuse box within the front cabin under the steering wheel. Remove the defogger fuse from the slot labeled S226. It should be a 30-amp fuse. Pull it out, and hold the fuse up to the light to check whether the metal plate inside is broken or blown. If it is, then replace the fuse. Check both sides of the slot in the fuse box with a voltmeter to make sure both sides register.
- 2). Examine the tabs holding the wires to the rear-window defogger in the Passat. If either side has disconnected from the black grid, pull the tab back from the window. Sand the flat side with the sandpaper from the repair kit. Use the electrical adhesive from the kit to glue it back to the wide strip on the side of the black grid. Let it set.
- 3). Look over the grid, and check for any breaks, scratches or gaps in the paint. Remove the wax paper from the back of the stencil from the repair kit. Stick the stencil to the line with the gap, and paint over the gap with the stencil and the conductive paint, which is also in the defogger kit.
- 4). Test the defogger. If it still has problems, take the Passat to a professional to look at the wiring and soldering running between the fuse box and the rear window.
