How to Cut Back Buddleia Davidii

    • 1). Cut all the buddleia's canes back to about 12 inches above ground with clean, sharp pruning shears. This will result in a profusion of new shoots that will bear more and larger flowers than the plant would have produced if left unpruned.

    • 2). Prune back any dead stems to ground level.

    • 3). Deadhead the butterfly bush as soon as individual flowers fade throughout the season. This will help to keep the plant looking tidy and encourage it to produce more blooms.

    • 4). Trim off all of the spent flowers immediately after the major heavy summer blooming flush. This will encourage the buddleia to produce another burst of flowering later in the summer.
