How to Install Shock Absorbers in a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

    Front Shocks

    • 1). Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels with a lug wrench, but do not remove them yet. Raise the front of the Jeep with a jack, and support the jeep under the frame with a set of jack stands. Now remove the lug nuts and front wheels.

    • 2). Open the hood and locate the top stud of the shock coming through the top of the fender wheel. Remove the nut with a deep socket and a ratchet, followed by the steal washer and rubber bushing. Set them aside.

    • 3). Move under the wheel well, and locate the lower mount just behind the steering knuckle. Remove the two bolts with a socket and ratchet. Pull the bottom of the shock toward the rear of the Jeep, then down from the upper mount. Remove it from the Jeep.

    • 4). Insert the top mount of a new shock up and into the hole in the fender well. Slide the bottom of the shock onto the lower mount behind the steering knuckle. Install the two lower mounting bolts, and tighten them with a socket and ratchet.

    • 5). Move to the top mount, and install a new rubber bushing, metal washer and the retaining nut onto the stud in the engine compartment. All the new hardware will come with the new shocks. Using a deep socket and ratchet, tighten the retaining nut on the stud.

    • 6). Replace the wheel and lug nuts, then lift the Jeep off the jack stands with a jack. Remove the stands and lower the Jeep. Tighter the lug nuts with a lug wrench. Repeat this process for both front shocks.

    Rear Shocks

    • 1). Raise the rear of your Jeep with a jack, and insert a set of jack stands under the rear suspension of the Jeep. You will not need to remove the tires in the rear.

    • 2). Support the rear axle with a jack, then locate the shocks. Remove the mounting bolt from the top of the shock at the frame mounting bracket, using a socket and ratchet. Follow the shock body down to the axle, and remove the mounting bolt from the axle bracket with a socket and ratchet. Remove the shock from the Jeep.

    • 3). Install a new shock in place of the old one, and install the lower mounting bolt through the shock and mounting bracket. Tighten the bolt with a socket and ratchet. Move to the top of the shock, and install the upper mounting bolt through the shock and upper mounting bracket. Tighten the mounting bolt with a socket and ratchet.

    • 4). Raise the rear with your jack, and remove the jack stands from under the Jeep. Lower the Jeep to the ground.
