When to Cut Back a Hydrangea Bush

Types of Hydrangea

Some hydrangea bushes will bloom on new growth while other types grow on old growth. The species that bloom on old growth set buds for the following year in the summer. Pruning during the fall, winter or spring will affect blooming of the old-growth bloomers, but only for the following season.

Climbing Hydrangea

You do not need to cut back climbing hydrangea cultivars except in cases of damage. In that case, cut back the damaged stems immediately.

Hydrangea Stems

Encourage longer stems on a hydrangea bush to use the future bloom as cut flowers by cutting back the bush immediately after the blooms fade. Longer stems will also make the blooms easier to dry.
