- 1). Fertilize the hosta plant in the beginning of summer. Stop fertilizing the hosta in July because late fertilization will encourage new growth, which may prevent the hosta from preparing for dormancy.
- 2). Prune the stalks and spent flowers down to the crown. Remove all wilted and yellow leaves from the plant. Remove the dead material and leaf litter from around the plant as well.
- 3). Water the hosta plant deeply before the soil freezes. This will protect the hosta from drying in the winter and put less water stress on the plant.
- 4). Remove all the weeds from around the hosta. The weeds will compete with the plant and steal the water and nutrients.
- 5). Apply 2 inches of wood chip mulch around the hosta in the fall before the first frost. Remove the mulch when the soil thaws.
- 6). Move hosta containers indoors to a basement or cool room to protect the soil from freezing completely.
