- Create a portrait of Santa Claus by using a child's hand to create his beard. Items you will need for this project include white washable paint, red construction paper, a cookie sheet, markers or crayons and glitter. Pour the paint onto the cookie sheet and have kids place their hand in it. Then have kids place their painted hand on the red construction paper with their middle finger about 1/2 inch from the bottom edge. If desired, sprinkle some glitter over Santa's beard. Let the beard dry completely. Have kids draw in Santa's face and hat.
- Help kids create and decorate their very own Christmas trees by using their handprints. Materials you will need to make handprint Christmas trees include a cookie sheet, washable paints in green, brown, red and yellow, legal-sized white construction paper, green marker and scraps of different colored construction paper. Draw a line down the center of the page when looking at it vertically. Pour the green paint on the cookie sheet and have kids place their hands in it. Help the kids create green handprints along the line on the paper with their fingertips pointing toward the bottom of the page. Then, by overlapping handprints, have the kids start adding more to create the shape of a Christmas tree. Get the kids to decorate the tree by using other colors of paint and scraps of construction paper.
- Kids will be able to create a snowman family on an ornament they can give Mom and Dad to put on the Christmas tree at home. Items you will need include a cookie sheet, white washable paint, paint pens in red, green and black, colored glass or a plastic ornament. Pour the white paint onto the cookie sheet, have kids get their hands covered in paint and then grab onto an ornament with their fingertips pointing toward the top of the ornament. Let the white paint dry completely. Kids can decorate the fingertips to look like snowmen by adding faces, hats and scarves with the paint pens.
- Use paper cutouts of a child's handprint to put together a wreath, complete with holly berries. Items you will need include green construction paper, scissors, red construction paper, a quarter, a pencil, Christmas ribbon and glue. Trace the child's hand on the green construction paper and cut it out. Repeat this step until you have about 10 to 15 hands. Arrange cutout hands on the table in a circle. The hands can be facing all different ways to create the wreath. Glue the hands together and let completely dry. Have kids trace around a quarter on red construction paper and cut out the shapes. Glue the red circles to the wreath in clusters of three. Help students tie a bow with the Christmas ribbon and attach it to the bottom of the wreath.
