How to Change a Car Battery in a VW Beetle

    • 1). Park your Beetle and turn off all of the accessories. Turn off the ignition and remove the key.

    • 2). Open the hood. Look for the battery on the passenger side of the engine compartment near the front. Pry the plastic cover off the top of the battery compartment with a flat-bladed screwdriver or other flat tool.

    • 3). Disconnect the negative cable with a wrench. Repeat the process for the positive cable. Remove the bolt from the bottom of the retaining strap with an extension attached to a socket and ratchet. Lift the retaining strap off of the battery.

    • 4). Remove the battery from the tray. You may need to wiggle the battery to get it past the power-steering fluid reservoir. Insert the new battery into the tray.

    • 5). Attach the retaining strap and tighten the mounting bolt. Connect the positive cable. Tighten it with a wrench. Repeat this for the negative cable. Snap the cover back over the battery compartment. Push firmly and the cover will lock into place. Close the hood.
