Jicama Plant Seeds

    When to Plant

    • Plant the jicama seeds in late spring when the temperatures remain consistently above 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Jicama requires hot temperatures to establish a fleshy taproot.

    Planting Conditions

    • Sandy loam soil is ideal for jicama seeds so the taproot formed is smooth. Plant seeds 8 to 10 inches apart in rows 3 feet apart.

    Considerations

    • It takes from three to six months for a suitable taproot to form when the jicama is grown in the tropics. Removal of flowers while the plant is young helps encourage the taproot to grow larger.
