- 1). Make sure the volume isn't turned down all the way on the iPod. If you have an iPod with a scroll wheel, move your finger clockwise around the wheel to turn up the volume on the unit. If you have an iPod Touch or iPhone, use the volume button located on the left side of the device to turn the volume up to an appropriate level.
- 2). Check that your external speaker isn't damaged if you're attempting to play a video on an iPod Touch or iPhone. Plug a pair of headphones into the device, and check if you can hear anything through them. If you can, the problem is not with the video but instead with the iPod Touch or iPhone's external speaker.
- 3). Make sure the video you're trying to play has sound in the first place. Play the video file on a computer to check that a sound track was encoded with it. If the video doesn't have sound when you play it on a computer, it won't have sound when played on your iPod.
- 4). Make sure the video you are trying to play is in the proper format. As of late 2009, iPods and iPhones can only play videos in the MOV and MP4 formats. Trying to play a video in another format could cause the video to lack sound. However, these other video format types probably won't sync to your device in the first place.
