- 1). Go to a plant nursery or garden department in a home improvement store and look for plants that are native to the area or will thrive in the climate. Sometimes these plants are tagged as "native" and sometimes they are in a separate area. The staff at the retail establishment should be knowledgeable about local, native plants that have adapted to the particular climate conditions.
- 2). Use a written guide to native plants for the specific area in Texas. Identify those that will thrive in local conditions, including rainfall, soil and temperature variations.
- 3). Consult a master gardener in the area. These gardeners are extremely knowledgeable about the local growing conditions and the native plants that thrive in them. The county agricultural extension office will also be able to provide a lot of information about growing native plants successfully.
