- According to the University of Minnesota Extension, lilies have stiff stems and narrow, thin leaves. The flowers are large and often fragrant, depending on the variety. The shape and color of the flower also depends largely on the variety.
- There are many types of lilies. The Lilies website indicates that the Asiatic hybrid varieties are among the easiest lilies to grow and offer the widest variety of colors. Oriental hybrids are more challenging because they do not thrive in hot climates. Other varieties include the trumpets, American hybrids and wild lilies.
- Lilies require well-drained soil and full sunlight, particularly the Asiatic and Oriental varieties. Lily bulbs do not go dormant, so the University of Minnesota Extension recommends planting the bulbs as soon as possible after purchase so that they do not dry out.
