How to Test Soil PH at Home

    • 1). Collect soil samples from different spots throughout your garden. The samples should be several inches deep and you should have about 10 samples.

    • 2). Combine the different samples into a bin and mix thoroughly. For more accurate results, wash out the bin and dry it before you use it.

    • 3). Take one cup of the soil out of the bin and allow it to dry out. Do not try to rush this step by putting the soil in the microwave or regular oven.

    • 4). Mix the powder from the soil testing kit with the prescribed amount of soil and distilled water. You can determine the amount of soil and distilled water by checking the instructions in the pH kit.

    • 5). Read the pH value based on the color of the water by comparing it to the color chart (colorimetric scale) provided with the pH test.
