- 1). Download the software that came with your MP3 player if you have not already done so. (Microsoft has issued special software for its Zune MP3 player, for example.) Find the CD that was in your player's box, insert it into your computer's CD drive and follow the onscreen instructions to install the software.
- 2). Open any music you want to transfer to your device in the transfer program. As is the case with iTunes -- only music you've opened within iTunes will transfer to your iPod -- your non-iTunes program can only transfer music it knows exists. Locate the music on your hard drive, select it all (if it's in the same folder) by holding down the "Ctrl" and "A" keys at the same time, right-click somewhere in the window, then select the name of your program from the "Open With" menu. Wait a few moments, depending on how much music you have, for all the songs to open in the program.
- 3). Transfer the music to your device. Connect your device to your computer using its USB cord, then wait for its program to recognize it. Click the "Sync" or "Update" button within the program to synchronize your device with your computer, thereby transferring your music to your MP3 player.
