    Process

    • The car camshaft contains a magnetic field created by a magnet on the camshaft. The camshaft also contains a number of pins, which are designed to spin when the camshaft rotates. The motion of the pins causes the magnetic field to fluctuate. The camshaft sensor is designed to detect the motion of the magnetic field and transmits signals to the car's computer, or electronic control unit. The computer uses these signals to determine camshaft current position and speed. Based on this information, the computer can then decide when to ignite the air fuel mixture and make the appropriate acceleration or deceleration adjustments.
