- 1). Spool your reel with 20-pound monofilament fishing line. Use a bait-casting reel to begin your steelhead career. Bait casting reels have enclosed housings and are tough to tangle. Tie a 4/O to 6/O barbed hook to the end of the line using a Palomar knot.
- 2). Attach two to three split shot sinkers to the line, approximately 6 to 8 inches above the hook. Cut a piece of frozen prawn and bait the hook. Push the prawn part onto the hook so the barb extends all the way through and faces down and out from the bait.
- 3). Wear fishing waders if shore fishing. Use the waders to get to deeper pools and cast out to place the bait into these darker and cooler pools. Attach fishing net to your vest or jacket. Use the net to scoop the large steelhead up and out of the water, preventing broken lines and lost fish.
- 4). Wear polarized sunglasses. These protect eyes from harmful UV rays and reduce glare off the water. Polarized glasses let you see the subtle silver flashes of the steelhead in the depths.
- 5). Carry your fishing license at all times. Check with your state for special Steelhead Tags. If unsure on your states rule regarding special steelhead stamps, get a copy of your state's current fishing regulations. Keep all licenses and stamps on your person to present to game wardens upon request. Failure to have them may result in fines, tickets or arrest.
