How to Hang a Street Banner

    • 1). Check local ordinances regarding the hanging of street banners before you place your banner. Some areas will limit the size and placement of banners, particularly if you plan to span a roadway. Many cities will require a special permit to hang a street banner. The permit will be for a specified period of time and usually ask what event the banner is for, as well as specifics about the size, material and number of banners to be placed.

    • 2). Measure the length and width of the banner, writing the measurements on a piece of paper. You will use this information when you determine where to place the banner.

    • 3). Select a location where you can hang the banner. Ensure the location is large enough to support the size of the banner. Also, look for a surface that you can nail the banner into or hang it from. Two poles will work or a flat, wooden surface.

    • 4). Determine what you will need to hang the banner. You may have to make modifications to the banner like cutting small holes in the corners if you need to use rope to hang it.

    • 5). Enlist someone to help hold the other side of the banner while you hang it. They will support the weight of one side for you while hanging the banner, and will also be able to help you ensure it's evenly hung.

    • 6). Place your ladder on one side of the banner and, bringing your tools with you, climb the ladder. Secure the top of the banner first and the bottom on that side. Depending how high you're hanging the banner, you may need another ladder for your friend to stand on while holding the other side of the banner.

    • 7). Move the ladder to the other side if you don't already have another ladder in place. Climb the ladder with your tools and secure the top first and then the bottom of that side. Check to ensure the banner is level by having friend step back and look before you hang the banner. Remove your ladder and tools, admiring your freshly hung street banner.
