Can I Grow an Aloe Plant From a Cutting?

    Preparing the Soil

    • In order to make an aloe plant thrive, you'll need to prepare the soil ahead of time. Fill a plant pot that has a removable base and a tray to catch extra water about 3/4 full with potting soil. Use a soil that is already fertilized and that has an organic compound in it. The soil should also be moist. You should remove all of the rocks from it. Be sure you put the soil in a thick pot with thick walls in case you have to brace the plant later on.

    Cutting and Planting

    • Snip the aloe plant's leaf close to the base, in its thickest part. Do not worry about the original aloe plant -- it will heal within a couple of days. When you have your cutting, take it to the container that you have already filled with dirt. Press it into the dirt, and put some more soil around it. Be sure that you cover up at least 1/4 of the leaf with dirt. Then water the plant completely. Continue watering the aloe plant, but do not let the soil get too moist. The soil should just about dry out between waterings, however don't let it get to the point where it is like dust.

    Observing

    • Keep an eye on the cutting of the aloe plant. You might need to lean the new plant against the side of the pot to keep it steady. It will continue to grow and new shoots will come up from the dirt. If you notice that the cutting you have planted is turning yellow or brown, try pressing it into the dirt further and watering it a little bit more. If the entire cutting falls over, begin again with a fresh cutting. As new stalks shoot up out of the ground, push the earth away a little bit to make it easier for them to emerge. As your aloe vera plant gets taller, stake it or lean it against the wall so the branches that have grown bigger than the pot will remain steady.
