- 1). Choose your planting site. Pole bans need full sun and good drainage, so choose a site that's in the open and preferably elevated to provide adequate drainage. Make sure you have enough room for multiple bean plants that might grow 6 to 8 feet in length.
- 2). Prepare the soil for your pole bean plants. Mix rich planting soil with an equal amount of compost to provide the nutritious, somewhat porous soil beans prefer. Add a thin application of fertilizer to further nourish the plants.
- 3). Sow your bean seeds or plant your bean sprouts. Leave about 5 feet of space between each sprout to allow maximum growing space and sun exposure for the plants. Plant rows 5 to 10 feet apart. Push the seedlings 1 inch into the soil and water sparingly.
- 4). Put Veggie Cages around your pole bean plants, with stakes to support the cages. When the bean plants are tall enough, tie them to the cages to train them to grow up. For ties, use strips of soft material, and always tie the bean vine's main stem rather than flowering shoots. This will contain the unruly bean vines, keep the vines and their fruit off the ground, and give the bean vines maximum sun exposure and air circulation.
