What Is the Care & Culture of Aspen Trees?

    Location

    • Aspens do better in acidic soil that drains well, which is found more often at high elevations. They also prefer to be on the north or east sides of slopes or buildings.

    Mycorrhiza

    • Mycorrhiza are fungi that develop a beneficial relationship with roots. There are commercial mycorrhizal treatments that can be added to the roots of aspens to help with root growth and water and nutrient uptake.

    Fertilizer

    • Fertilizer for an aspen should have slow-release nitrogen. Quick-release nitrogen may stimulate weak new growth and cell walls could become elongated.

    Suckering

    • Suckering occurs when small aspens, called "suckers," grow off the roots of a mature aspen. These will need to be removed if you don't wish to have more aspens in your yard.

    Diseases

    • Aspen are more susceptible to disease and insect infestations than most trees. Keep an eye out for unusual spots or decay on the leaves or bark. Most of the time, the tree can be saved if the problem is caught early enough.
