- 1). Find or buy a 5-gallon bucket with a lid. Make sure the handle is securely fastened, as this will be your hanger.
- 2). Flip the bucket over. Use a 2-inch hole saw to drill a hole in the bottom of the bucket. You may also want to drill several small holes in the lid to allow water to get into the planter. Flip the bucket again so it is upright.
- 3). Cut a circle of landscape fabric to fit inside the bucket. This will help hold the soil in. Place it inside the bucket and make a 2-inch slit in the fabric to correspond with the hole in the bucket so you can later place your plant in the soil.
- 4). Fill the bucket with your potting soil. Place the lid securely on the bucket and turn it upside down.
- 5). Find a sturdy place to hang your planter. If you have a patio cover, choose one of the main beams, as it will be stronger. Screw in a heavy-duty hook in the middle of the beam for hanging your planter. You can also buy a pole with a curved end and a hook at garden supply stores or use a clothesline pole.
- 6). Visit the Mini Farm Homestead for tips on planting in your upside-down planter. Tomatoes are a common choice, but you can plant a wide variety of vegetables and herbs this way.
