- Irish moss has very few natural pests; slugs are the biggest threat to this ground cover. Slugs belong to the scientific class gastropod. A slug's body consists of mostly water to aid in the production of mucus. Fermented items attract slugs, with the exception of alcohol.
- Slugs feed off plants leaving behind holes. Slugs cause the leaves of Irish moss to appear jagged and chewed. These pests have the ability to destroy large plants because of the rate slugs ingest food. Plants cannot replenish their foliage fast enough to counteract a slug's damage.
- Check Irish moss plants at night because slugs are nocturnal creatures. Reduce the humidity around Irish moss plants to help prevent slug infestations. Salt kills slugs by evaporating the water in their body. Prevent soil salinity by removing the slug from the plant before applying salt to the slug. Metaldehyde baits are another method of killing slugs.
