- 1). Lay the shirt on a clean, flat surface. Smooth out any wrinkles by pressing the fabric with your hands. Align the sleeve cuffs and the bottom of the shirt.
- 2). Place a measuring tape at the inside of the t-shirt neck. Extend the tape along the shoulder. Figure out how large of a scoop neck you want. Anywhere from two to four inches makes an off-the-shoulder shirt wearable; anything more makes both sides of the shirt fall down.
- 3). Mark a dot where you want the cut to begin. Measure the other side and do the same.
- 4). Put the measuring tape in the center of the shirt neck. Measure vertically one to two inches. Mark the spot where you want to connect the cuts. Turn the shirt over, measure and mark the shirt in the same spot.
- 5). Open the neck of your t-shirt. Place your scissors at the center of the neck and cut a straight line down the middle to the dot. Turn the shirt over and do the same on the back. Flip the shirt back over and place the scissors at the neck's right side. Cut a straight, horizontal line to the dot. Repeat on the left side.
- 6). Move your scissors along the shirt neck using the fabric slits as a guide. Begin on the right side, angle your scissors and cut from the shoulder down to the center split. Remove the scissors and place them on the left side of the shirt. Cut downward and curve to meet the center. Turn the shirt over and do the same on the other side.
- 7). Slip the shirt over your head. Position the shirt so that your neck is in the center or so that one side is slipping off the shoulder.
