- 1). Cut the ROS shrub off as close to the ground level as possible, using a chainsaw or pruning saw, following all applicable safety precautions. Cut the shrub into pieces small enough for disposal, or use a chipper-shredder to reduce the shrub branches into a material than can be used as mulch.
- 2). Dig out as many roots as much as possible by shovel, using an axe to sever thick roots, as needed. No matter how much you dig some of the root will remain and it is possible suckers of the plant will reemerge. If you want a new ROS plant in the area, allow the suckers to grow.
- 3). Spray the suckers with an herbicide after they develop their first leaves in the spring, if you do not want new plants. Gardeners often use broad-spectrum herbicides containing glyphosate (such as Roundup) or triclopyr.
