- 1). Prune your Canary Weigela shrub for size or shape in July after the shrub has finished blooming for the season or when just a few flowers are left on the plant. Remove all dead plant material that did not survive the winter in the spring after the last hard frost has passed in your region.
- 2). Remove all dead canes down to the point of healthy wood or down to the crown of the plant just above the soil line in the spring. Cut the branches individually with your secateurs on the bias and gently pull the dead branches clear of the shrub, composting or discarding them.
- 3). Control the size and sprawl of healthy, live shrub tissue by cutting back the tips of the branches to the desired length after bloom. Remove no more than one-third of the shrub mass in each pruning. Refrain from doing this terminal pruning to the shrub if you want to maintain the natural fountain-like form of the shrub.
- 4). Reduce the size of the shrub without altering its basic arching shape by removing one-third of the oldest and longest branches each year, down to the crown of the plant just above the soil. Spread the pruning cuts throughout the plant to keep a balanced appearance.
