- Seroquel should not be used on patients younger than 10 years of age and should not be used in geriatric patients with dementia because it may cause heart failure, sudden death or pneumonia in older adults with dementia-related conditions.
- Seroquel is a pregnancy class C drug, which means it is currently unknown if it causes harm to unborn fetuses.
- Reported side effects include fever, stiff muscles, confusion, sweating, fast or uneven heartbeats, muscle movements you cannot control, numbness or weakness with sudden onset--particularly on just one side, headache, confusion, problems with vision, speech or balance, increased thirst, frequent urination, increased hunger or feeling faint.
- Less serious side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, constipation, anxiety, agitation, breast swelling or discharge, missed menstrual periods and weight gain.
- Patients should avoid drinking alcohol, driving before knowing how they react to the drug, and getting up from a sitting or lying position, as they may fall over.
- Patients are advised to get emergency medical help if they experience any symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat.
Worsening symptoms, such as mood or behavior changes, anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping or feeling impulsive, irritable, agitated, hostile, aggressive, restless, hyperactive (mentally or physically), more depressed or having thoughts of suicide or hurting oneself should be reported to the prescribing physician as soon as possible.
