Side Effects of Plaquenil

    Common Side Effects

    • Users of Plaquenil initially experience several common (and usually minor) side effects, such as mild headache, stomach cramps, dizziness, nausea, diarrhea and appetite loss. These side effects are almost always temporary, but if you find that they persist or get worse with time, you should discuss the situation with your doctor.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Though less common, serious side effects of Plaquenil exist, as well. If you suspect that your side effect is of a more serious nature, you should get emergency medical attention as soon as possible. Some signs to check for are chest ache, loss of coordination, yellowing of the eyes or the skin, abnormal bleeding or bruising, chills, fever, sore throat, changes in vision, mood or mental changes, weakness of the muscles, difficulty walking, loss of hearing, seizures, ringing inside of the ears, blurry vision and blistered, red, peeling or swollen skin.

    Allergic Reactions

    • Allergic reactions to Plaquenil are considered to be possibly dangerous side effects. If you notice signs of allergic reaction, you should immediately seek medical care. Some symptoms of allergic reaction to this medication include the chest feeling tight or heavy, problems with breathing, itchiness, hives on the skin, swelling on various parts of the body (like the face, lips, tongue, and mouth) and skin rash.

    Warnings

    • Plaquenil is not an appropriate medication for everybody. Some people should not use Plaquenil, such as those who have experienced any kind of vision loss (whether partial or complete) due to using the medication (or other medications that are similar) before.

    Overdose

    • Overdosing on this medication can lead to some extremely serious side effects. If you think that you might have taken too much Plaquenil, you need to immediately get medical assistance. Some symptoms of Plaquenil overdose are heart issues, heart failure, seizures, not being able to breathe, drowsiness and problems with vision.
