Writing Morning Pages - 11 Good Reasons For, 1 Great Reason Against

Morning Pages are just that:  Pages written in the morning.
  They can be about anything or anyone, and they are for you and you alone.
  More specifically, it is suggested that we write them - three full pages of them - in longhand stream-of-consciousness, every single morning.
  No matter what.
Morning Pages are one of the two basic tools introduced by Julia Cameron in her once groundbreaking and now classic book, "The Artist's Way:  A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity.
" Along with the suggested weekly Artist Dates, they pack a powerful punch, and are among the most beloved - and feared - personal and professional development tools out there.
  I can hear some of you now:  "Three whole pages?  Every single morning?  You have GOT to be kidding me!"  I know, because I sometimes think the same thing, and I teach this stuff!  "Clearly," I say to no one in particular, "this Julia Cameron person doesn't have a clue about what it's like to be me.
  There's the time factor, and the fact that I've got nothing to say.
And of course, if I actually write down my fears and dreams, won't they come true?  Or worse yet, what if someone finds - and reads - them?"  These are all perfectly good excuses for not writing morning pages, and common, too.
  But they are not good enough, especially when you consider all of the good reasons FOR writing Morning Pages, of which there are many, including the following eleven.
Eleven Good Reasons FOR Writing Morning Pages:
  1. To achieve healthy, constructive expression of emotions;
  2. To attain greater clarity of thought and ease with prioritization;
  3. To augment brainstorming abilities;
  4. To develop a deeper spiritual life;
  5. To enhance mood and outlook on life;
  6. To have accurate documentation of life experiences;
  7. To heighten problem-solving skills;
  8. To improved performance of daily activities;
  9. To increase levels of self-awareness;
  10. To manage stress and obtain other health benefits; and
  11. To stimulate a healthier mind.
If you still don't want to write them, though, don't worry, because I am about to give you, as promised...
One Great Reason AGAINST Giving In to All those Good Reasons and Writing Morning Pages:  1.
Writing Morning Pages will change your life.
As I tell my Artist's Way students, "I cannot guarantee that you'll get your novel written, get that gallery showing, win the case or even learn to cook.
  But what I can guarantee is that something will happen.
"  And time and again, with my now hundreds of Artist's Way students, I have seen that something be magnificent.
  Maybe it won't be blatantly obvious, or even financially rewarding, although that has sometimes been the case.
But way more often than not, the changes that I have seen occur, as a result of using this one, basic tool, have been truly remarkable.

In fact, as Julia Cameron herself says, "It is impossible to write Morning Pages for any extended period of time without coming into contact with an unexpected inner power.
So, by all means, if this is something you don't want, don't write Morning Pages!  But if you do want this, to know yourself more deeply, and to have access to the more powerful parts of yourself, and to receive all the other benefits, too, be forewarned.
   And proceed at your own risk!
