- 1). Remove the negative battery cable from the battery terminal, using a wrench to loosen the retaining bolt on the cable end. Isolate the cable from the battery so it cannot accidentally contact the battery while you are working.
- 2). Locate the serpentine belt tensioner on the front of the engine. The tensioner is a small pulley mounted on a spring-loaded arm and is responsible for tensioning the belt on the accessory pulleys.
- 3). Place a socket and breaker bar on the bolt in the center of the pulley. Rotate the breaker bar counterclockwise to relieve the tension on the belt.
- 4). Remove the old belt from the pulleys and discard it. Install the new belt on the pulleys, being sure that it follows the same path as the old belt.
- 5). Rotate the breaker bar clockwise, allowing the tensioner to tighten the belt. Do not allow the tensioner to snap back when releasing it or damage will occur to the tensioner and internal spring.
- 6). Install the negative battery cable on the battery terminal and tighten the bolt with a wrench. Start the engine and verify that the belt position is correct on the pulley. If it is not running true on the pulleys, adjustment is required or damage to the belt will occur.
