It's ok to be selfish. In fact, I honestly believe that everyone ought to consider being a bit more selfish in their day to day lives. Call me crazy, but in the past six months I have followed this advice and I feel like a completely new person. I've read stories about people joining this movement all over the world and lives are changing all around us - for the better! Celebrities were probably the first people to launch this behavior, then star athletes and musicians followed shortly after.
I realized that you don't have to make a lot of money or be in the spotlight to take part. I found people that are semi-homeless participating to children and non-profits. The fact is that anyone and everyone can benefit from this very simple and yet profoundly deep advice. I'm sure you're wondering where this is going. Ok, let's go a little deeper. Have you considered the meaning of life and how to really make your life as rewarding as it can be?
I can imagine how many times this question has been pondered. The simple and yes, selfish answer is to do something that makes someone else's life better. Not just anyone's life, rather, make it someone you do not know and will likely never see again. There is no reward greater than the feeling you will get in purposefully making someone else's life better. There are simple examples of paying for someone else's dinner (after you've left) at a restaurant, or giving someone a gift that would otherwise be completely out of their reach, or smaller acts of encouraging someone to pursue a dream or making someone laugh that otherwise doesn't have very much to laugh about.
Costumes can play a huge part in these selfish acts you are about to take on. There are more places than I can mention where you can dress up in costume and really brighten someone's day. What about a homeless child's birthday party - how cool would it be to show up as Batman!? Or what about visiting the children's hospital in a clown costume with a few balloons and tons of smiles? It would be selfish, yes, because you will feel like you are on cloud 9, but trust me, the person receiving these random acts of kindness will be right there with you.
Perhaps doing your weekly grocery shopping all decked out in a Pink Gorilla outfit would bring some laughs and smiles to the other shoppers in the store. Otherwise, this is just an ordinary trip, why not make it special and take a chance on giving someone in your presence a lift they wouldn't have gotten if you hadn't shown up in full costume? Costumes are not just for Halloween, remember this fact and you will go far.
Hang out a cross-walk sometime in your Flasher costume and just press the button for those that are waiting to cross the street. Ok, so maybe the Flasher Halloween costume is a bit much, but you get the idea. Put smiles on faces of people you do not know. You don't know what they could be going through in their personal lives and it's up to each of us to do our part. I know it's selfish because it makes you feel so good, but it'll be worth it! So, what are you waiting for... Go out and get a Halloween costume today and start doing your part! Costumes are very powerful - in the right hands, they can and will make your life better as well as someone else's.
