How to Plant Rhododendron Cuttings

    • 1). Fill a small pot with a mixture of two parts moist peat, one part moist sand and one part moist perlite.

    • 2). Pull off all the foliage on the lower half of the stem clipping and any flower buds. Cut off the top half of any large leaves remaining on the top half of the stem.

    • 3). Scratch off the bark along the lower half of the stem, on the cut end.

    • 4). Pour a little rooting hormone into a paper cup and dip the cut end of the stem into the hormone, covering the cut. Tap the stem gently against the top of the cup to shake off excess hormone.

    • 5). Insert the cut end of the stem into the potting soil, about 1 inch deep. The soil should be moist, not wet.

    • 6). Cover the pot with a clear plastic bag to create a greenhouse. Place it in bright, indirect sunlight. It will take between two and four months for the cuttings to root. The plants need at least 16 hours of light. Keep temperatures between 72 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 7). Transplant the cuttings into a container in the spring. Allow them to grow another season before transplanting them into your garden.
