Video: How to Apply Makeup for Seniors

Video Transcript

Hi, I'm Shana King, senior director of beauty and education for Anisa International. And it can be really confusing sometimes for our gorgeous grandmothers what products do we use. So I'm hoping that I can give you a couple tips on the right choices. You want to start with foundation or concealer that really have full coverage. Something that's mattefying and also something that doesn't have a lot of oil in it. You want to choose mattefying and protecting but also you want to choose full coverage product like BB cream, loose mineral powders and or liquid foundation. Blush and eye shadow that don't have matched tint to it or shimmer really important to get a great brow, mascara, something preferably doesn't flake that's longer wearing. And you want to create and have a really nice collection of makeup brushes that are really soft so they won't pull at the skin. I'm going to use this great landcove foundation brush. This beauty cream is by Smashbox. What's nice about this is it's got two things in one. It's got your SPF, your moisturizer and a little bit more coverage than a traditional tinted moisturizer. Absolutely. Our gorgeous Jeanette is our beautiful grandmother today. So I'm going to start by applying product right to the center of her face and just blending outwards. And again make sure you're not being too aggressive on the skin. You're going to blend and pat. And you just want to make sure that you're blending all the way out to the hairline and then also following along the jawline as well. And follow on both sides, OK. And what this is going to do is that little bit of coverage, something that there's not multiple steps which is great. OK and then if you wanted to use a great little powder to set it, this one by Cover Effects is awesome. It has a little bit of coverage and you just want to dust that over and that's just going to help set the makeup throughout the day. My biggest thing is eyebrows. Eyebrows at any age really frame a face. But I find for some of our gorgeous grandmothers, maybe we've over tweezed it over waxed. The hair is a lot more fine. So we really want to bring back and define a shape. So this is a great pencil by Laura Mercier. And you really just want to start in the inner corner. Now eyebrows should start out here and end about here. So that's a good gauge. And then you just want to simply start blending on and creating this kind of subtle arch. And it won't take lots but you can see the difference two sides just by adding that little bit of brow color. Now I'm going to follow in the same side. You can also use a clear mascara or clear brow gel to kind of help set this. This is really one easy way to add and enhance the skin in one simple step. And then with eye shadow, going to use this all over shadow brush. This one is great by Jap and Ask. Just going to apply a light base shadow. Simply dusting to the entire lid on both sides. And just add a little bit of color. This one is a great neutral color again I'm seeing a lot of matte. Especially when you're dealing with sagging eyelids. You don't want anything that's going to draw attention. You want something that's going to enhance. Shimmer has a tendency to light reflect it almost fill up fine lines and wrinkles and that's going to draw negative attention. We certainly don't want that. And you'll notice I'm being really light handed. You don't want to pull. That's where the importance of a great eye shadow brush really plays in. And then I'm going to add a little bit more drama in to the crease area by using this great little crease domed brush. I'm going to choose a little bit of a deeper color. So when Jeanette opens her eyes she's going to have this pop of color that's not going to be anything too intense because I think that's the other thing. You want to be tasteful. And then mascara. Same rule with like the eyebrows. I find that mascara light applications stay away from anything that's black. I prefer like a light brown. It's going to really pull open her eyes. And then try to get something that's longer wear because you don't want anything that's going to dry or flake because that's going to cause darkness underneath the eye. This mascara is by Maybelline. So I'm just going to put a little bit. You can close for me. And I'm just going to put a little bit on the top and on the bottom. You can even use a little bit of lengthening or primer serum to the lash or curl it. But again I'm just using a little bit just to add a little bit more color and finish the look. And when you're choosing your lip gloss stick with something that has no shimmer. A nice rose pink light pinks, something that's neutral. I'm going to finish with a little bit of blush and this is a great angle brush that's going to add some contouring to her cheeks. And just find the apple of the cheek and pulling outwards towards the hair line. So for all you gorgeous grandmothers out there, my name is Shana King. Senior director of beauty and education at Anisa International. And I hope you feel fabulous and feel like you're a little bit well equipped when you go in to the beauty counter next time. See you later.
