- 1). Determine the severity of the leak and where the fluid is leaking from. Lay down large sheets of cardboard or white poster paper on the ground underneath the transmission and let the car sit while running. Observe where the leak is coming from and how much is leaking out. This will help pinpoint where the leak is and determine what action is needed to fix the problem.
- 2). Check the gasket on the transmission pan. This gasket can fail because of age and excessive wear. Replace the gasket as needed and tighten the bolts on the transmission pan to ensure the fluid does not leak out.
- 3). Replace and tighten the transmission fluid lines. In many cases, rust and corrosion can eat away at the lines and allow transmission fluid to leak out.
- 4). Add a bottle of transmission stop-leak. Follow the instructions on the stop-leak bottle and add the fluid into the transmission. This measure should be considered a temporary fix until the vehicle can be taken to a garage for further inspection and repair.
- 5). Take the vehicle to a certified automotive repair shop for further repair. The leak may be caused by an internal seal that requires disassembly of the transmission to fix. An experienced mechanic is best qualified for this complex task.
