Can You Mix Different Size Tires?

    Spare Tires

    • According to Tom Torbjornsen, maintenance editor for AOL Autos, doughnut spare tires are good for about 70 miles of use, but you should check your vehicle owner's manual to be certain. These tires have no tread, are smaller than your usual tire, and are designed to get you to a repair shop in an emergency.

    OE Specifications

    • Certain cars are built to run with different size tires on the front and rear axles. Original equipment, or OE, specifications are provided in the owner's manual of your auto or on the manufacturer's website. Check these before installing mixed tire sizes on your car.

    Warning

    • When you mix tire sizes on a vehicle not designed for it, you may encounter problems with steering, handling and performance. By driving a car this way, you're endangering yourself, your passengers and other drivers on the road.
