- The gynecologist will need to know some personal information about your past medical history, your age at your first period, the first day of your last period and your sexual history.
- The nurse will ask you to get undressed and slip on a gown. Your blood pressure and weight are often obtained at this time. You may also need to give a urine sample or simply empty your bladder before the exam.
- The doctor will ask you to lay back and a breast exam will be performed. The doctor will gently check each breast for lumps or other abnormalities.
- For the pelvic exam, you will be asked to move to the edge of the exam table and your feet will be placed in stirrups to help spread your legs open. The doctor will check the external vaginal area, insert a speculum and gently swab the cervical area for a pap smear to check for cancerous cells, then a manual and rectal exam may also be performed.
- Once the exam is complete, you will be instructed to get dressed. The doctor will then discuss results, answer questions and discuss prescriptions, if necessary. Pap smear results are not often available immediately and may be mailed or revealed by phone a few days or weeks after your exam.
