Good Tips for After Getting Your Tongue Pierced

    Pain and Swelling

    • Your tongue will be significantly swollen a week or two after the piercing, and you may experience slight pain. Healing time is generally anywhere from four to six weeks depending on the person and lifestyle. Chewing and sucking on ice can help relieve both of these symptoms. The coldness of the ice will numb and soothe, as well as keep the piercing and mouth from drying out. Ibuprofen pills will also help in the reduction of swelling. Take one or two pills before piercing as well as a few hours after.

    Foods

    • Avoid spicy foods. This will only irritate the piercing and increase swelling. Eat soft foods such as mashed potatoes, soups and pudding. One week of soft foods is ideal, or untl the swelling has gone down. Anything hard or sticky will be incredibly hard to eat and might irritate and stick to the piercing. Avoid drinking alcohol and smoking for at least two weeks after getting the tongue piercing. Kissing should be kept to a minimum as not exchange any fluids.

    Cleaning

    • Use an alcohol-free mouthwash at least four times a day or after every meal or snack. This will help to refresh the mouth and fight infection. Gargling warm saltwater twice a day is another way to clean and help in the healing process. (1 tablespoon of sea seal mixed with an 8-oz. glass of water is the recommended amount.) Buy and use a brand-new toothbrush with softer bristles as well as a gentle toothpaste during the healing process. Avoid putting anything such as a pen, fingers or keys in your mouth. The bacteria and dirt will hinder healing and may cause infection.

    Affects

    • After your tongue piercing you may find it difficult to speak, spit and eat. Re-learning how to do these things will take time. See a dentist or your piercer if you find that the swelling has not subsided or notice any fluids leaking from the piercing spot. An infection could be present -- do not hesitate to seek help. Avoid playing with the new piercing or clicking it against teeth, as it could break and damage the enamel as well as interrupt the healing process.
