- 1). Connect to the Internet using your wireless connection and click "Start," "Run," then type "command" and press "OK."
- 2). Type "ipconfig" and press the "Enter" key.
- 3). Scroll up and record the number listed as your "Default Gateway." This is your router's IP address.
- 4). Open a web browser and type the IP address number into the address bar and press "Enter."
- 5). Enter your router's administrator name and password when prompted to log into the router. If you never set up a name or password, these fields may be set to a default setting. Consult your router's user manual to find the default name and password; defaults are often things like "admin" and "password."
- 6). Navigate your router's administrative settings area and look for an option to change the wireless security mode. The menus available will be different for each router, but this option should be in area called "Wireless security" or something similar.
- 7). Change the wireless security mode to WPA2 personal or WPA personal. WPA offers better security than the WEP security mode.
- 8). Enter a password for the wireless connection in the line that says "WPA Shared Key."
- 9). Choose to save the changes. The router menu should have a button called something like "Save Settings" or "Save changes." After making this change you will have to log onto your wireless connection again and use the password you created to connect to he Internet.
