- 1). Slice a ripe or over-ripe tomato in half with a knife and scoop out the seeds with a spoon. Place them in a jar, along with the liquid and gelatinous matter that comes along with the seeds.
- 2). Add 1/4 cup water and cover the jar without fully sealing its top. Let it sit three days at room temperature. The liquid will ferment, grow a layer of mold and produce an interesting odor, but all is proceeding well.
- 3). Scoop off the fermented matter and floating seeds from the top and discard them. Pour the rest of the liquid including the seeds from the bottom into a sieve and rinse them with clear water until the seeds are as clean as possible.
- 4). Spread the seeds on a paper plate or newspaper to dry. Space them apart so they're in a single layer. After several days, when they're thoroughly dry, put them in a plastic bag or a clean, dry jar and label them. Keep them in a dark, cool, dry place during the winter until planting time.
