- 1). Raise the hood. Locate the three tubular pipes of the exhaust manifold. Find them bolted to the cylinder head on the passenger's side of the engine. Check that the bolts are secure and the gaskets don't appear worn. Look for moisture buildup or cracks on the manifold.
- 2). Lift the Saturn Ion on a hoist. Get under the car to inspect the entire exhaust system.
- 3). Shine a flashlight under the car to inspect the head pipe that connects to the manifold underneath the engine. Inspect the rest of the exhaust system, including the catalytic converter, muffler and tailpipe.
- 4). Run your hand over the entire exhaust system to feel for holes, cracks, rust or loose connections, especially if you have heard any telltale noises, such as ticking during acceleration or rattling or sputtering while idling. Tap gently with a hammer along each piece to locate any weak sections.
- 5). Feel the hangers and clamps that hold the exhaust system on the vehicle to make sure they're secure.
- 6). Lower the car after you've completed the inspection.
