How to Plant Satsuma Plums

    Planting a Sapling

    • 1). Till the soil in an area of your garden that receives at least six hours of full sunlight each day. Plums grow their best and produce the most fruit when grown in full sunlight.

    • 2). Mix 2 to 3 inches of organic compost or peat moss into the soil to increase drainage as you till, reducing the chance of root rot and similar damage from standing water. Begin preparation of soil in early spring, as soon as the soil can be worked.

    • 3). Dig a hole that is twice the width of the roots of your young "Satsuma." The depth of the hole should extend only far enough that the root ball of the tree will be even with the surrounding soil. Planting any deeper will lead to ineffective nutrition transmittal and dieback in the leaves.

    • 4). Set the tree firmly into the ground and backfill the hole. As you go, tamp down lightly on the soil with your shovel or your foot to eliminate air pockets.

    • 5). Water the soil thoroughly immediately after planting to encourage the soil to settle fully around the roots.

    Planting a Seed

    • 3). Bury the seed 2 inches deep in your intended growing area in late fall, just before the first frost sets in. Be sure the seed is completely covered with soil.

    • 4). Water the newly planted seed thoroughly to settle the soil around it. The seed will stratify over winter and will sprout a new "Satsuma" plum plant in the spring.
