Finding a golf getaway for friends, family, or a casual vacation can be difficult without knowing specifics about golf resorts and courses. Many user reviews are inaccurate or misleading, while higher brow locations may not invest much money in advertising, relying instead on word of mouth. A golf vacation for the upper class doesn't require the services of a travel agent, however; there are plenty of great places in and around the United States.
Michigan has more golf courses than any other state in the US, and plenty of travel locations host the upper echelon of guests from the automotive industry to sports celebrities. Michigan's Crystal Downs country club is not only one of the most exclusive locales, but one of the most expensive as well -- be prepared to pay for the finest quality when you stay and play such a location. At nearly five hundred dollars for an eighteen hold reservation, Crystal Downs provides plenty of difficulty for a modest par seventy course.
Shinnecock Hills in New York boasts that it is the first organized golf course in America, having started in 1871, as well as the first to allow women golfers. Shinnecock is known for incredibly difficult short games but relatively average driving. Rated either the second or third best course in the last four years, Shinnecock has a long reserve list -- nearly eight months in advance is required for booking -- to add to a four hundred dollar greens fee.
Las Vegas courses offer a way to see the town in style, as many greens overlook the Strip. The most expensive course in America, the Wynn Golf and Country Club, charges six hundred dollars for a standard eighteen holes. Despite the cost, however, many customers say it is not a challenging course, but merely a diversion from the other entertainment outlets in Vegas.
