Purana Qila, Delhi - The Magnificence of India

The Purana Qila or Old Fort is a landmark in Delhi and is overflowing with stories from the nation's past. Its architectural splendour and interesting surroundings are well loved by visitors along with the quality entertainment shown on site.

India did not become one of the most glorious and exotic countries on the globe to visit overnight; the wonders that comprise the well loved nation today are fragments and developments of hundreds of years of history. Across this vast nation are several sites of great value, religious epicentres, ancient kingdoms and glorious palaces that attract visitors in the thousands. One such site located in Delhi, a favourite among the nation's diverse cities, is the Purana Qila, or the Old Fort. The magnificent structure now lies in ruins, but it is preserved well enough to show the variety of styles that has gone into its design, from that of the Hindus to the Muslims to the Afghans.

The landmark site in Delhi is reflective of a prominent period in Indian history. It was originally built by Humayun in the 1530's and when this leader was overthrown by the Afghan King Sher Shah, the latter took over the fort and developed it further. The mosque this leader built on site is one of the most popular attractions here. When Humayun recaptured the city several years later, he once again took over the fort and there are extensions seen here that he added during this time. It is indeed a remarkable site, with several rooms and walls made from marble and red sandstones. The architectural design seen on the various archways and entrances, and domes and rooftops is admirable and will leave visitors feeling inspired by this unique South Asian style.

In addition to the historical value of the Purana Qila, its surroundings too make it a well loved site among visitors. There is a lake close by on which visitors can enjoy boat rides that will add to the excitement of the experience. Nearby the site is a zoological gardens too that visitors can enjoy. Yet despite all this, probably most thrilling is the light and sound show that is enacted at the site, using the beautiful Purana Qila as a backdrop. Performed in both Hindi and English, the show depicts centuries of Indian history and is definitely not a performance to be missed.

While the site shows visitors the grandeur that was a part of India in the past, The Leela Palace New Delhi reflects the splendour of the nation today. This New Delhi hotel outshines other 5 star hotels New Delhi with its stylish accommodation and fine service.
