The three words, "Mom, I'm bored," are enough to set a mother's teeth on edge. Sometimes, though, it's a good idea to load up the munchkins and head out on a mini-adventure. Fortunately, in a major southern city like Atlanta, Georgia, there is a never-ending list of activities that can cure kids' boredom. - When Atlanta pharmacist John Stith Pemberton mixed a syrup concoction with carbonated water on May 8, 1886, he started a beverage phenomenon. Although filling your children with soda may not be your ideal family outing, there are a world of things to do at the World of Coca-Cola. Your family can learn about the history of the beverage, view a fully functioning mini-bottling line, see the world's largest collection of Coca-Cola memorabilia or watch a 3-D movie in an interactive theatre. And if you're in an indulgent mood, the kids can take home a free bottle of Coca-Cola. Admission is $10 for children ages 3 to 12 years and $15 for adults.
- A past winner of the Southeast Tourism Society's "Top 20 Events," the Yellow Daisy Festival is an annual event held every September. A quick 20-minute drive northeast of downtown Atlanta, this Stone Mountain celebration has turned crafting into serious family fun for 43 years. The four-day craft show includes live entertainment and food vendors. A children's crafting corner encourages kids to become budding crafters. The festival is free, but parking is $10 per vehicle.
- On Sept. 23, 1978, Kermit the Frog and Jim Henson cut the opening ceremony ribbon for the Center for Puppetry Arts. Today, the center is more than just a warehouse for puppets. It presents a series of live puppet shows that tell innovative, new stories and adapt classics stories. It also has a hands-on museum that boasts traveling and permanent exhibits, such as an educational display of 350 puppets, including Chinese hand puppets, African rod puppets and "Pigs in Space" from "The Muppet Show." Admission prices vary per activity and performance, but in general, tickets to family performances are $16, which includes admission to the workshop and museum.
- The five-acre Picnic Park and All-Children's Playground is on Willowbend Road in Peachtree City. Not only is the playground an economical outing (the park is free), but kids can play until dusk, ensuring that everyone gets a good night's sleep. The park offers a large, connected series of play structures built on top of a cushioned, rubber surface. The picnic area is covered and the entire park is wheelchair accessible. If climbing on playground structures isn't enough exercise, horseshoes and fishing are also available.
