- 1). Detach the negative battery cable. Disconnect the gear shift cable lever from its case.
- 2). Remove the bolt located directly behind the gear shift lever case. Separate the transfer case gear shift control lever from the transfer case.
- 3). Unfasten the four bolts connecting the fan shroud to the radiator. Remove the two bolts connecting the transmission to the engine.
- 4). Take out the front and rear floor console boxes.
- 5). Unscrew the gear shift knob. Remove the boot cover, boot and case from gear shift.
- 6). Push down on the gear shift, pivot and turn it counterclockwise 90 degrees. Lift it up to remove it from the gear shift case.
- 7). Disconnect the four-wheel drive switch harness connectors.
- 8). Jack up the vehicle and support it with jack stands.
- 9). Disconnect the back-up light switch.

Disengage the starter motor electrical connections and remove the starter motor. Remove the transfer case skid plate. - 11
Drain the transmission and transfer case fluids into proper containers. Dispose of the fluids at an auto parts store. - 12
Make re-installation reference marks on the front and rear drive shafts and flanges. Remove the drive shafts. - 13
Disconnect the speedometer cable and remove the bolt and ground wire from the gear case. - 14
Remove the Three-Way Catalytic Converter (TWC), muffler and tail pipe. - 15
Use a transmission jack to support the transfer case and remove the two bolts from the torque stopper bracket. Remove the transfer case crossmember's six bolts. - 16
Place a wood block between the distributor housing and the bulkhead to protect the components from damage. Lower the transmission jack slowly. - 17
Detach the breather hoses from the gear shift case and cover. Remove the gear shift case from the transmission casing. - 18
Support the transmission with a transmission jack. Remove the 12 transfer case bolts that attach to the transmission. Detach the transfer case from the transmission shaft and remove it from the vehicle.
